What causes mould?
Mould needs several conditions to grow in home, including mould spores (always present in the air), a food source (wood, drywall), darkness, warmth, oxygen and time.
However, moisture is the critical factor to growth as the other conditions listed above are always present in home. When moisture is brought into the home and left untreated, mould spores can begin to form in as little as 24 to 48 hours.
A few common things that can cause moisture to accumulate and turn into mould include leaky pipes, leaky roofs, increased humidity, poor ventilation, basement flooding and leaks in the foundation.
What does mould look like?
Mould comes in many shapes and forms, some of which are toxic to humans.
The most common type is Black Mould, which grows easily in homes and is extremely dangerous to humans as prolonged exposure can have long term health effects that in extreme cases have led to death.
Another less prevalent but still common type of mould is Aspergillus, which needs more favorable conditions than Black Mould to grow but once present, is extremely dangerous.
How much can it cost to fix?
You should never try to attempt to fix a mould problem unless it is a very small area and can be fixed with a household cleaner.
If the mould is contained in a single area for a short period of time, it can be repaired relatively cheaply by the homeowner or a professional with the proper equipment for less than $1,000.
However, when mould has been left to grow unchecked it is extremely dangerous to your health and can require a partial or complete gutting of the entire home, which can cost tens of thousands in the most extreme cases.
What are my options?
Depending on the severity of the problem, you may or may not have to leave the home while the mould removal and remediation is taking place and the problem may cost tens of thousands of dollars to fix. Even then, there is no guarantee the problem will not come back.
